The Physics Behind Brain Freeze

Brain freeze, also called ice cream or slushy headache, results from eating or drinking very cold substances. It’s a self-resolving condition that’s not thought to cause any damage to your brain. Older theories speculating on the physics of brain freeze focused on the abrupt temperature change that takes place in the sinuses or upper palate when cold substances are consumed. New research claims it’s more related to rapid dilation of an artery in the brain. As a consequence, blood rapidly flows into the brain and causes short-term pressure and pain. Certain migraines can mimic brain freeze, so consult with your doctor if you experience chronic headaches.
